Kimito Kugimiya got a long lead at the beginning of the final game. Miyake, in second place, started off with 29-each hand and nipped at Kugimiya’s heels. Every time Miyake closed in on Kugimiya, Kugimiya pulled away from Miiyake. Kugimiya kept his lead to the end and clinched the title.

Five Dragons Cup
A signature new year event of JMSA: a tournament of 3 games where the first
three players who made any of the five hands with a Chinese character “竜“
(dragon) in its name can get a cash prize. (Japan has a long tradition
of giving money to children as a New Year’s gift.)
The five hands are Pure Terminal Chows, Three-suited Terminal Chows, Pure Straight, Knitted Straight and Mixed Straight.
The first three players who achieved three, four or five dragon hands are also awarded. There is no one who has achieved five dragon hands so far.
Players compete for the cash prize in a festive mood. Every second counts. It’s amazing how fast people raise their hand declaring “Mixed Straight!” or “Pure Straight!” here and there in the tournament venue. Many JMSA members look forward to this special tournament every year.
8th Five Dragons Cup was held on January 3, 2010 at Kingkoh-so in Yuraku-cho, Tokyo. 40 players from all over Japan strived to make dragon hands as fast as possible.
Every year, people try to start off with Mixed Straight and Pure Straight. In the second game, many aim at Knitted Straight. The third game is Three-suited Terminal Chows time. You can see many exposed chows of 1-2-3 or 7-8-9 all over the tournament venue; a scene typical of Five Dragons Cup. Only Miku Sakuma made Three-suited Terminal Chows this year and she was the winner of the tournament with the highest raw score.
No one made 4 dragon hands this year, and Pure Terminal Chows has remained unattained since the beginning of the Five Dragons Cup.

Players strive to go out with any of the dragon hands faster than
anyone else. For some reason, it's difficult to make
all-too-common Mixed Straight or Pure Straight at Five Dragons Cup. |
 |
Shogo Niman (二萬章吾); first to achieve 3 dragon hands with
Three-suited Terminal Chows, the least glamorous hand unless at
